How I'd Style: Organic Cotton Slip Skirt

Spring is finally officially here (thanks goodness)! We could go cliché and assume that embracing the seasons aesthetics in a literal sense is the way to go when it comes to fashion. But if, like me, you were raised by the likes of Miranda Priestly and Andy Sax, you'll already know that florals for Spring, are anything but... (I know you can finish the sentence without me).

For me, Spring is about encapsulating the essence of transition. That's why I favour building a wardrobe around versatile timeless base pieces that can be transformed and styled depending on the season and the weather, especially important for us UK girlies where we can experience all 4 seasons in a day. Building a wardrobe about versatile base layers doesn't mean your wardrobe has to be bland or 'basic'. Instead, think of such pieces as a canvas, for you to make into your own masterpiece.

Slip skirts re-take centre stage

Slip skirts, initially intended as functional undergarments to ensure proper draping of dresses and skirts, helped to provide insulation during winter, and prevent transparency in clothing (a notion that today's current sheer trend would laugh in the face of). However, during the 1960s, these straight-cut skirts crafted from delicately adorned cotton underwent a transformation, shedding their practical image.

Celebrities of the time capitalised on the captivating appeal of slips, with one iconic example being Elizabeth Taylor, who famously showcased their allure in the 1958 film adaptation of Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (Independent).

However, thanks to the birth of sultry minimalism of the 90s, led by designers like Calvin Klein, sex appeal went mainstream and underwear became outwear. Slip dresses and skirts went front and centre stage. Made popular by 90s muses Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Gwenyth Paltrow, and even worn the red carpet in hot pink by Tia & Tamera, the slip took on a new life of its own. From the catwalk's to streetwear, people experimented with lengths, colours and contrasting trims.

The versatility of the slip skirt makes it a wardrobe essential year round. Pair with cute tank tops and brogues in summer or use as a base layer with oversized knits and heeled boots in winter. You know a garment qualifies for timeless status when it would look just as well placed on a 90s catwalk as it would in a street style snap in 2023...

"We are focused on creating pieces that offer long-lasting value to our customers. We believe that the true cost of a garment is not just the price tag, but also the environmental impact and the value it brings to your wardrobe... Our goal is to improve the cost per wear of each item, which is the price of a garment divided by the versatility and longevity of the piece.

While an average item of clothing is worn only 7 times before being thrown away, our aim is for you to become an outfit repeater: to wear and love our each piece over and over again. By creating pieces that are both stylish and functional, we hope to empower our customers to live their lives to the fullest while minimising their environmental impact."

Shop the look

Their collection includes...you guessed it (you're on a roll today!), a slip skirt! Opt for a sophisticated look in this clean-cut skirt for its comfortable feel and flattering finish. This beige style design is made from sustainable stretch cotton that sits high on the waist and has a slit vent for ease of movement.

Of course, we're not out here just regurgitating looks of the past- unless that's your thing. Take the iconic slip skirt and interpret it in your own way. For me, anything inherently deemed 'feminine' immediately needs something chunky to contrast the look. Brogues are a perfect shoe to bring contrast and weight into the look. Meanwhile a bomber jacket builds a structural silhouette. Pairing warm tone gold chunky jewellery and tortoise shell sunnies helps to balance out the orange hues in the bomber jacket's tartan print. Meanwhile, a navy tote handbag compliments with the cool blue hues in the print.

In line with my values, the pieces below come packed with sustainable credentials that have been verified by Veo's award winning ethical criteria, and of course, received my seal of approval too.
